The Museum
The Gaitis Simossi Museum comprises of four buildings. The first of them is dedicated to Yannis Gaitis. On the ground floor will be exhibited the artist’s paintings from 1948 to 1963 outlining the transition from the early surrealist-inspired canvases to the triumphant entrance of the faceless human figures. At the same space, later installations with stylized anthropakia (little people) will complement the expressionist power of the abstractly rendered figures, preparing the ground for the continuation of the exhibition upstairs. On the first floor, the anthropakia of Gaitis mature period are released from the two-dimensional surface of the canvas and occupy the museum space gathered in multi-faceted compositions and large installations.
The second building is dedicated to the rarely exhibited oeuvre of Gabriella Simossi. Including works representative of the sculptural production of the artist from 1970 to 1983 as well as a masterpiece series of collages, the collection illuminates the multilevel artistic trajectory of the Greek sculptress. More clearly, through the noble simplicity and the plastic sensitivity of the soft-white sculptures, the personal mythology of the artist is articulated and aspects of it that are less known to the public are highlighted.
The third and fourth buildings will house the café and the museum administration respectively
